Yuvraj Singh being the highest paid player of IPL may not be a surprise for many cricket lovers. His previous record in the T20 format has made him the most wanted player in IPL. But it should have been Suresh Raina instead of Yuvi as the highest earner if the teams had considered past trends. Unfortunately he was kept out of auction as Chennai Super Kings has retained him.
Raina is one of the most successful players in the history of IPL. He played a key role in the success of Chennai Super Kings in all the seasons. He is the highest run scorer in the IPL with 2,802 runs where he also took 21 wickets. Though Yuvraj played many match winning innings for Team India, he couldn’t do much for Kings XI Punjab. He scored 1,475 runs and picked 29 wickets with his bowling. Yet he didn’t rank in the top 20 highest scorers in the IPL.
Despite many memorable innings for Team India in the past, its current form which matters in cricket. He has struggled to secure a place in the team after his cancer treatment and he could only score 160 runs in his last eight ODI matches. Except his brilliant knock in the T20 against Australia there has been nothing remarkable after his comeback. He was also kept out from Team India for the upcoming Asia Cup.
But none of these negative aspects could hit his popularity as a T20 player in IPL. Royal Challenger trusted him despite of his recent ups and downs. Everybody knows that he is an unstoppable man on his day. It’s not easy to forget his role in winning India’s first T20 World Cup in 2007. His six sixes in Stuart Broad’s will count as one the best moments in T20 history. He is a hitting batsman, valuable wicket taker and brilliant fielder. His lofted sixes of on the onside are always fun to watch. The emotional he brings to the game makes him a mass player, a most adorable player irrespective of performance.
Desiring a player like Yuvi is quite normal in money based tourney like IPL. But can he justify being paid such huge amount? The answer will have to wait. IPL has a history of expensive players not doing all that well. Deccan Chargers did great in the first season with expensive players like Shahid Afridi, Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds. But Rajastan Royals won the tourney in 2008 with comparatively unknown players.
It is difficult to jump to conclusion about the players in an unpredictable tourney like IPL. RCB have become stronger with the arrival of Yuvi. They are definitely are one of favourites in the tourney with a strong batting order – Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers. Let’s see what Yuvi is going to do for his team.
