The student community of University of Hyderabad (UoH) has started a signature campaign for an Open Dias manifesto presentation, for the Student Union elections this year. The new changes in the manifesto presentation have irked the students, as they will not have an opportunity to question the contestants regarding their manifestos.
The open letter says that the student community wants to have an interaction with the contestants before they vote for them. Hence, they have requested the Election Commission of the University to cancel the radio broadcasting of manifestos, and conduct an open-dais session, like the previous years.
The open letter, with the signatures of the students, will be submitted to the Chief Returning officer and the Dean of Students Welfare.
According to Naveen Sen, Station Coordinator of Bol Hyderabad, all the presidential candidates are supposed to record their speeches at Bol Hyderabad studio at 10 am on the 28th of October. No publicity has been done from the administration’s side about the same.
Many students don’t even know about the recent changes in the election process, as there has been no proper communication between the administration and the student community.
Prof. B.V. Sharma, Dean of Students Welfare, said “We have already discussed this with the contestants. They have agreed to go on air to present their manifestos.” But surprisingly a presidential candidate doesn’t know about it. Gurram. Ashok, an independent contestant for the presidential post said, “I did not receive any information from the Returning officers or DSW regarding the manifesto recording. But, I do feel that we should get a chance to interact with the student community before we ask them to vote for us.”
Even the contestants are opposing the broadcasting of manifestos as they are going to lose an opportunity to present their manifestos in front of the whole student community on a single platform. Harsha Vardhan, another contestant for the presidential post said, “I would always prefer the Open Dias session. But the administration is trying to implement these changes to make it a one way process.”
Shirisha.V, another contestant said, “It would be better if we have an Open Dais session. But it should have happened much before as we have only one day for the campaign.” Other contestants have also expressed similar opinions.
